Golf Putting Tips – 10 Tips to become a better putter

|

Three putting and missing short putts on a regular basis? I know that I did this a long time before I actually made an effort to become a better putter. Here are my golf putting tips that improved my game and made me score lower on a regular basis.

In this article you will find some golf putting tips that might improve your game, but if you really wanna take things seriously and to a new level I highly recommend reading a book called “The Art of Putting” (Buy the book). I prefer reading on a Kindle as it is easier to carry around and I can even take it to the course easily with me.

But let’s continue with the putting tips… Here are 10 tips to improve your putting:

1. Work on your setup.

Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart and your weight is evenly distributed. Keep your eyes directly over the ball and use a relaxed grip on the putter.

2. Focus on your stroke.

Keep your backswing and follow-through smooth and controlled, and avoid decelerating or “hitting” the ball. Instead, try to “roll” the ball off the putter face.

3. Practice your aim.

Use alignment aids like lines on the ball or the putter face to help you aim accurately. Also, pay attention to the slope of the green and adjust your aim accordingly.

4. Develop a consistent pre-putt routine.

This can help you focus and prepare mentally for each putt. Include elements like taking a few deep breaths, visualizing the line, and rehearsing the stroke in your mind.

5. Use your body to control the putter.

Instead of relying solely on your arms and hands, try to use your whole body to generate power and control the putter face.

6. Experiment with different grips.

Try different grip styles, such as the traditional “overlapping” grip or the more modern “cross-handed” grip, to see what feels most comfortable and effective for you.

7. Practice from different distances and angles.

Try putting from various distances and angles to develop your touch and control. Also, practice putting from off the green to improve your chipping and pitching skills.

8. Consider using a “belly” or “long” putter.

These specialized putters can help you maintain a stable, consistent stroke, especially if you struggle with putting consistency.

9. Take care of your putter.

Keep your putter clean and well-maintained to ensure it performs at its best. Also, make sure it’s properly fitted to your body and stroke.

10. Seek professional advice.

If you’re struggling with your putting, consider seeking advice from a golf instructor or coach who can help you identify and correct any flaws in your technique.

How good can you become?

When aiming for something, it is first good to know your current situation and where you can realistically expect to go. So what is your current average per round? If you don’t know, then start tracking. With Apps like GameBook it’s really easy.

Many say that putting is the part of the game where amateurs actually have the chance of being on the same level as tour pros. While this might be true, it takes a lot of effort to achieve.

But how good are the Pros at putting? Is it realistic to become as good?

The best Tour Pros average less than 30 putts per round (top 5 around 27 putts) and even the worst putters on tour average around 30 putts.

That’s not a lot of putts per round on average. Can you realistically achieve that?

Maybe, but it’s not going to be easy. However, if you’re currently averaging 36 putts or more per round there is definitely room to improve.
